Incline Flat Roofs -- When you mention a flat roof to clients, the picture they create in their minds is that of a perfectly horizontal roof concerning the ground. Such a carport roof will most definitely perform its function, but not as intended. While the structure will protect the car, entirely flat roofs have draining issues that compromise on structural integrity. For instance, when it rains, it is more than likely that rainwater will pool, weigh down the structure and consequently cause damage. The same would happen when it snows. Therefore, you need to inform your clients that as they construct their carport, they should angle the roof slightly. Such inclination will improve draining and clients will not need to worry about the roof falling on their vehicles.  

Roof Sheet Laying Direction -- For clients erecting a carport for the first time, it is crucial to understand that the structures are in most cases stand-alone. Therefore, flat roofs are susceptible to high winds mainly if they are laid to ensure maximum protection. The direction in which your clients will lay the roof sheeting will consequently determine how long the structure will last. As a rule, it is important to note the prevailing wind direction when installing roof sheets on a flat-roofed carport. Laying roof sheets opposite wind direction will ensure that the sheet-overlap is adequately protected. Great care should, however, be taken to avoid over-tightening the screws, as this will lead to sheep warping and in turn damage.     

Gutter Installation -- To most homeowners, gutters should only be installed in the main house. Nothing could be further from the truth because carports are usually constructed against one wall of the main house, with its flat roof being low. When the main house does not have its gutter, rainwater will flow in the direction of the low-lying carport roof and rely on the latter is the gutter system for drainage. With a flat carport roof receiving a fair amount of rainwater, its gutter will get overwhelmed by the vast amounts of water. As such, your client should consider gutter installation on carports for adequate drainage.
