When you're renovating a room in your home, it's easy to become focused on the decorative details and fixtures of the project. These are, of course, important elements in successful room design from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. As well as choosing the right cabinetry, light fittings, window coverings and so forth, it's also important to make sure that you get the bare bones of the room right to begin with.

The walls of a room are an integral part of the overall design that sometimes doesn't get the attention and consideration they deserve. Although the walls tend to act as a backdrop for more visible room elements, they also play an important role in creating a new room that looks polished, fresh and professional. Here are two areas of renovating that are specific to the walls and which should be performed by experienced professionals for the best end result.

1. The plastering

Plaster is a virtually ubiquitous internal wall covering in both new and older style homes. In fact, it's so commonplace that it's often overlooked as an important element in a room. Unfortunately, plasterwork often goes unnoticed unless there's evidence of poor workmanship. Issues such as rough patches, poor joinery and uneven application are all too apparent once the paint is applied.

Many times, this poor workmanship is because a homeowner has chosen to do the plastering work themselves instead of using the services of a professional plasterer. Plastering is a deceptively difficult task which deft, well-practised contractors make look easy. For an even, flawless and smooth finish, only a professional job will suffice.

2. The painting

Painting is another renovation task that is far more difficult than it looks. It's also another task that many home renovators take on themselves, to the detriment of the quality of the final product. Anyone can coat a wall with paint but for a high specification, pristine and attractive finish, you'll need to hire a professional painter.

Often, the paintwork is completed by the homeowner in a misguided bid to keep their budget low. However, skimping on these professional labour costs is a false economy. While you may save a few hundred dollars in the short term, you may lose many times more when it comes to how much value your renovation project adds to the home. Sloppy, unprofessional work can detract from the value and turn away buyers who are looking for a high-quality home.
